I don’t have a comment but I have a suggestion. If you are going to start the VA business you have to get the ebook How to Become A VA written by Nell and Jen. I bought it and I am telling you it is awesome.

I’m actually doing some VA work, but haven’t actually started a business, per se. Do I really need to start a business, or can I just do freelance VA work and count it as “other” income for tax purposes?

I know there are benefits to owning a home business, but right now the only expenses I have are my internet access and printing supplies. Would it benefit me to go through the hassle of getting an EIN and starting an actual business?

    Thanks :)

    Mara,

When I speak about a business, I mean it more as a website and mindframe and not taxes and legal mumbo jumbo.

If you don’t have a website, I would recommend it. I believe any VA, freelance or not, will benefit from having a website and a blog.

As a VA business owner, I never got an EIN or even used a business plan. I know some people would never do a business without certain things like that, but I never felt the need for them at the time.

If the way you’re doing things now is working, then keep it up. But, I’m always a big fan of a website/blog for any business.

    Thanks, Nell, for the answer.

The website is where I’m stuck. What would you put on your website besides your abilities and prices? I have a name and have bought the domain name, but I don’t know what else to put on the website.

    Sounds lame, doesn’t it?

Mara, that’s not lame. I’m thinking of starting my own VA biz myself and was thinking I need to build a website first but don’t really know what else to put on there other than the pages you suggested.

I’m at a total loss too. Good luck with your biz. :)

Some of the typical pages on a VA site are:

    about me
    prices
    services
    testimonials
    FAQ
    contact
how a VA can help the client
articles you might have written that are relevant to your niche
    blog
    newsletter

You don’t have to start with all of that. If you don’t have time to write articles, FAQ, keep up a blog or a newsletter then just start with the basic pages for the time being :)

You can always look at other VA sites for getting ideas of what to add, what a typical VA site look like…etc.

    Wishing you the best.

Hi everyone! I’ve got my own site that I’ve put up. I do have a blog but I have been EXTREMELY lax in updating it. Instead I’ve been looking for jobs and trying to write some ebooks.

Anyway, I wanted to add that one thing you should have on your website is a Privacy Policy. If you want to look at my site and get some ideas (even if it’s how you don’t want to do your site) then go to http://www.officeexcellance.com and look around.

I’m not perfect by any means and I certainly am not an expert at website layout.

Nell, you do a great job here and I appreciate what you do.

    Rebecca,

Thanks for sharing your advice and website with my readers. I appreciate it.

And thanks for your kind words.
