Don’t Give Up…Not Just Yet.

January 16, 2008 | 2 Comments

Are you frustrated with your job search and about to give up? Before you give up have you been doing the following:

  • Searching everyday for new job leads
  • Expanding your job options to include more than data entry/typing
  • Creating a career plan which you decide how many hours you need to work, what you’re skilled in, how much you need to make, what type of jobs you’re looking for…etc
  • Hired a professional resume writer to revamp your resume package
  • Following up after you apply or are interviewed
  • Expanded your idea of work from home to include freelancing or even a virtual assistant business
  • Invested in your career with learning material or services that assist in finding jobs
  • Been an active participant of a message board in order to network with other telecommuters

Finding a job is truly a job in itself. And finding and landing a telecommuting job is even more difficult than a job outside the home. It’ll take time and a lot of effort.

Companies That Require Testing

September 30, 2006 | Leave a Comment

“When applying for jobs I noticed some of the companies require you to take a test. I never know what the test is going to be like so I don’t apply to those companies. Do you know what the tests are for?”

As with any company, online or not, they want to know you have the skills necessary to do the job you are applying for, therefore, many require you to take certain skills tests. These tests will vary with each type of work you apply for and with each company.

For example; if you’re applying for transcription, they may want to know your typing speed, accuracy and whether you have the ability to listen and decipher poor quality recordings. If a company says you need to be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point then chances are their skills tests will be related to those programs to see if you are indeed proficient. Some want to know you have good customer service skills and others need to check your data entry speed and accuracy.

I recommend you read up on the company, what they are really looking for, what they do, who they offer services to… anything to give you an insight to the company and the position. Then if you think you can do the job well, go ahead and test. If you don’t apply or take the test you have ZERO chance of getting the job but if you do apply and test, you’ve now upped your chances of landing the job to 50/50.

Giving Out Your Mailing Address

“I am majorly leary of giving out my home address not knowing if these are legitimate companies and are safe. What is your suggestion?”

Even as a home-based business owner I am leary about giving out my physical address so instead I rent a post office box for all my business/online activity.

Before giving out any personal information you should do a little research on the company who is requesting it. One fairly easy way is to just Google the business name and read what you find. You can also add the word “scam” to the search (XYZ Company scam) and that should bring up any topics talking about if the company is legitimate or not. Remember though that new scams are popping up daily so just because you don’t find anything negative isn’t a guarantee that they are legitimate.

You can find more information on researching companies here,

If you do some research and still can’t find any information on a particular company, post the company URL on the message board (in the scam folder) and we’ll see if we can help. http://www.telecommutingmoms.com/bb

What is a Ghost Writer

August 17, 2006 | Leave a Comment

“Nell, what is a ghost writer? I’m confused as I’ve never heard this term before?”

I received many of these types of questions after sending out information in my newsletter about becoming a ghost writer. And it’s a good question because many people have never heard of this type of work or even the name!

Ghost writer means that you are hired to write an article for your client and your client gets to put their name on the article. Ghost writing isn’t anything new. Many people have used ghost writers in the past for writing their books (like celebs for instance)…making their thoughts, experiences and life look pretty in a book.

Lets face it many of us don’t have the talent for writing, but we have a lot to say! So that is where ghost writers come into play. A ghost writer can take the ideas and information a client has to say and put together nice article, book, e-book, special report (anything the client needs). Or a client can tell the ghost writer “I want an article written about starting a business online” and the ghost writer will research the topic and write the article.

Just remember that as a ghost writer you’re being paid for the article, but the client gets to put their name on it and take credit for the article. Your name will be no where in that piece of work.

Rates for ghost writers can vary. It depends on the type of work you’re being hired for. Obviously someone who writes an e-book for a client will be paid more than if a client just needs a 300 word article.

Pregnant? Don’t Wait.

August 1, 2006 | Leave a Comment

“I’m 8 months pregnant and want to stay home after the baby is born. Should I start looking for work at home now or wait until I have the baby?”

My recommendation is to get started with your job search months before you need to actually start working at home. The reason being is that it can typically take weeks and usually up to months in order to locate a legitimate work at home job you want and qualify for & and chances are it’ll take awhile for the employer to contact you about the job, then interview you, and decide you are or are not the person for the job.

You could run into situations where someone needs you to start right away and you cannot, but most of the time it will take several weeks to several months before you find and get a job.

I would also recommend that you also sit down with your budget & decide when you HAVE to get a job. Having a baby AND starting a job at home can be stressful and it’s better if you have at least a few weeks (if not a couple months) to get adjusted to stay at home life with a new baby before you decide to throw a job into the mix.
