Thank You - Everyone Likes to Hear it

When you send someone a gift, don’t you like to hear a Thank You?

When you hold the door open for someone, don’t you like to hear a Thank You?

And when you take your time to answer questions, help someone out, or offer your advice don’t you like to hear a Thank You?

I think the answer to all of those questions can be a yes. Most everyone enjoys to hear a thank you or receive a thank you note. I know I do. And not only do I like to hear it, but I enjoy expressing my thanks to others. Maybe it was just how I was brought up, but most everytime I feel a situation warrants a thank you I offer it.

So don’t you think the same could be said for an interviewer who took the time to phone you up, tell you about the job, answer your questions, and get to know you better? Sure, it’s their job. But that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a thank you.

When I worked outside the home as a leasing agent I know I enjoyed hearing a thank you. It made me feel that the person really appreciated my time and made me feel important. Not only that, but I would almost always remember the polite appreciative person.

The same can be said for the person interviewing you. Not only will a thank you email or mailed thank you note make you stand out from the crowd. It’ll also show you as a professional, kind, appreciative person. Who wouldn’t want to hire someone with those traits over the person who doesn’t express those traits…in the interview and afterwards? I think I can be reasonably certain the answer is no one.

So the next time you have an interview make sure you’re going the extra mile and sending a thank you note afterwards to the person who interviewed you. You’d be surprised how far it will take you.
